Havelock Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Andaman archipelago. It got its name from Sir Henry Havelock - a British general who served in India. In 2018, it was renamed Swaraj Dweep, but it is still popularly known by its old name. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose declared the Andaman islands independent from British rule and hoisted the Indian flag here in 1943. No matter what you decide to call it, this island has a lot of sights and activities for everybody.
See an Active Volcano
In your list of things to do in Swaraj Dweep, a visit to Barren Island must be included. Barren Island is home to the only active volcano in the Indian subcontinent. There are daily boat rides from Havelock Island to Barren Island. Visitors are not allowed to step on Barren Island for obvious safety reasons, but you can admire its might from a safe distance. The last noteworthy eruption on Barren Island was in 2017. It registered a score of 2 out of 8 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. Other minor eruptions happen from time to time, which is why visitors are not allowed to get too close to the island.
Laze on a Beach
No island getaway is ever complete without spending at least one day working on your tan and whiling the day away on one of the many beaches peppered around the island. We recommend Radhanagar Beach and Elephant Beach as two beaches you absolutely must visit during your stay in Swaraj Dweep. Radhanagar Beach has the distinction of being a blue flag beach, which means it actively works towards being sustainable and eco-friendly. Kalapathar is also a famous beach where you can choose to host a picnic beside the serene waters of the Bay of Bengal.
Water Sports & Activities
